Pay Rate: £35.58 per hour (assignment rate)
Contract: Locum & Ongoing Contract

Main Duties:
- Medical Assessments: Conduct initial medical assessments for new inmates, evaluating their health status, medical history, and any immediate medical needs.
- Medication Administration: Dispense prescribed medications to inmates according to established protocols, ensuring proper dosages and schedules are followed.
- Health Monitoring: Regularly monitor and assess inmates’ health conditions, including vital signs, mental health, and chronic medical conditions. Respond appropriately to any health emergencies.
- Treatment Planning: Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop individualized treatment plans for inmates with chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, or other medical conditions.
- Wound Care: Provide wound care and dressing changes for inmates with injuries or surgical wounds, while ensuring proper infection control measures are adhered to.
- Health Education: Conduct health education sessions for inmates, covering topics such as hygiene, disease prevention, managing chronic conditions, and promoting overall well-being.
- Mental Health Support: Assist in identifying inmates with mental health concerns and collaborate with mental health professionals to provide appropriate care, referrals, and crisis intervention when necessary.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the prison facility, providing initial medical care and stabilizing patients until further medical assistance arrives.
- Infection Control: Implement and maintain infection control measures within the prison healthcare unit to prevent the spread of contagious diseases among inmates and staff.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, psychologists, social workers, and correctional staff, to ensure comprehensive and holistic care for inmates.
- Health Records Management: Keep accurate and up-to-date medical records for each inmate, documenting assessments, treatments, medications, and any changes in health status.
- Referrals and Follow-Up: Make appropriate medical referrals for specialized care, diagnostic tests, or consultations outside the prison when necessary. Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled and attended.
- Health Promotion: Develop and implement health promotion initiatives tailored to the specific needs of the inmate population, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.
- Medication Management: Maintain the medication inventory, monitor medication storage conditions, and reorder supplies as needed to ensure an uninterrupted supply of necessary medications.
- Documentation and Reporting: Prepare incident reports, health assessments, and other necessary documentation related to medical care provided to inmates. Ensure accurate and timely reporting to authorities as required.
- Crisis Intervention: Participate in crisis intervention strategies and de-escalation techniques when dealing with inmates who are agitated, distressed, or exhibiting challenging behaviors.
- Continuing Education: Stay updated with current medical practices, correctional healthcare guidelines, and attend relevant training sessions to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
Requirements of the Prison Nurse:
- Must be registered on the NMC and must have a relevant qualification in nursing
- Prison clearance and experience is essential
