The pay rate for this locum Prison/HMP Pharmacist job is £40 per hour (Assignment rate) and is an ongoing contract.

Main Duties:
- Dispense prescribed medications to inmates, ensuring accurate dosage and proper labeling of medications.
- Conduct medication reviews and assess the appropriateness of prescribed medications for inmates, taking into consideration potential drug interactions and contraindications.
- Provide medication counseling and education to inmates, explaining proper administration, potential side effects, and the importance of compliance.
- Oversee the administration of medications to inmates, ensuring compliance with proper protocols and regulations.
- Maintain an inventory of medications, including procurement, storage, and distribution, while adhering to security measures.
- Maintain accurate records of all medication transactions, including dispensed medications and controlled substances, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Work closely with healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and mental health specialists, to optimize medication therapy for inmates.
- Monitor inmates for the effectiveness and safety of their medications, and make recommendations for adjustments or changes as necessary.
- Implement safety measures to prevent medication errors and diversion, including regular audits of medication storage areas.
- Ensure strict control and documentation of controlled substances, including adherence to all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Verify the legitimacy of medication requests and prescriptions, preventing unauthorized access to medications.
- Conduct health education programs for inmates, addressing topics related to medication management, chronic disease management, and substance abuse prevention.
- Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies, such as drug overdoses, and provide appropriate interventions, including administering antidotes when necessary.
- Stay up-to-date with all relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines related to pharmacy practice in a correctional facility.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the healthcare services provided within the prison, including medication-related processes.
- Implement infection control measures related to medication preparation and administration to prevent the spread of diseases within the prison population.
- Promote overall health and wellness among inmates, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and preventive healthcare practices.
- Adhere to security protocols and safety measures to protect both inmates and staff from harm and maintain a secure environment.
- Maintain comprehensive and confidential records of pharmaceutical care provided to inmates.
- Stay current with advancements in pharmacy practice through ongoing education and training.
Requirements of the Prison/HMP Pharmacist:
- Must be registered on the GPHC as a pharmacist/must have a relevant qualification in pharmacy
- Prison clearance and experience is essential
- CTC clearance is essential
